Historypin

How’s this for a fantastic idea?

I was reading today about a new website called Historypin which exists alongside Google Maps.  The idea is for people to upload old photos of streets, cities and landscapes from all over the world, tagged by place and by year, so that you can see view a particular location at any point in history (just as you can view its present-day appearance on Google Street View).  This wee video explains it much better than I can:

I can’t think of a better candidate for Historypinning than the Titanic Quarter – all the history and heritage that’s crammed into every square mile.  And even the photos taken over the past year are already becoming museum pieces – the pace of change is so fast that some of the background scenery in early Dock Movies is already out of date!  So if you have any old pictures of the TQ – in its recent redevelopment, or further back into the past – I’d love to hear from you.

Belfast isn’t represented at all on Historypin at the moment – let’s change that; we’ve plenty of history to go around!
