Rentacrowd – unite!

Well guys, we did it!

Just got home, tired and happy, after a fantastic day laying out the furniture in Dock Cafe.  It’s now ready for tomorrow – for the Songs of Praise film crew to film, for the first time in history, a programme from a church in the Titanic Quarter.  Have a quick look at the pics – I think it looks fabulous.  My profound, heartfelt thanks to all concerned in helping us pull it all together in such a short space of time.

So now – the invitation!  The filming is happening at 10am tomorrow (Sunday 26th) at Dock Cafe, and you’re invited… rather than film me sitting in the cafe on my own like Norman No-Mates, we need a crowd (or “background artistes” if you prefer) to fill the cafe with life and movement.  So, if can you find it in your hearts to come and drink coffee, enjoy the comfy sofas, catch up with friends, and appear in the background on BBC TV into the bargain (I know, I ask such terribly hard things of you) – then see you at 10 tomorrow!

Dock Cafe’s Big Day

Oh my word!  I thought that the day we signed the Meanwhile Lease was the most exciting day in the history of Dock EVER – but the day I’ve just had beats it to a pulp!

This was the day the signs went up:

This was the day the artwork (from the Yard Gallery in Holywood) went on the walls:

This was the day the electricity got connected and the lights went on:

This was the day that we collected the first batch of furniture – comfy seats, squashy sofas, and Tegan The Barista’s very own coffee bar:

But today was only the start… tomorrow is going to be even better!

As you can see from the photos, pretty much everything is now in place to turn Dock Cafe from an empty shop unit to a warm, welcoming, beautiful, thriving community hub.  And that’s what we’re gonna do by sunset tomorrow.

Time is of the essence – Eamonn Holmes and the Songs of Praise team are returning to the TQ on Sunday morning, and they want to film in Dock Cafe.  So this is our Day of Reckoning, people of The Dock – let’s rise to the challenge!  do it for Eamonn!  11am onwards tomorrow (Saturday) at  – (oh how I’m going to enjoy saying this for the first time) – AT DOCK CAFE IN THE TITANIC QUARTER!  Yeah!  Seeya there!

Meanwhile, in the Titanic Quarter…

YESSS!!! That’s the blog title I’ve been bursting to write for AGES!  It felt good!

So, what’s going on?  Why have I kept darkly hinting that something big was on the horizon, but refusing to give any details?

Well, it would’ve been jumping the gun to go public with this before the contract was signed and sealed, but I can now reveal: The Dock has just signed a Meanwhile Contract with Titanic Quarter Ltd – the first Meanwhile Contract in Belfast, in fact.

So what’s a Meanwhile Contract?  Well you can either watch me explain it (with the usual moderate amount of enthusiasm) in this short vid, or read on…

Meanwhile is a brilliantly simple idea.  It’s a way of bringing life back to the many town centres throughout the UK that are seeing a heartbreakingly increasing number of boarded-up shops.  Check out meanwhile.org for loads of great examples of community groups, charities and churches finding creative, inventive uses for those empty and disused commercial spaces.

The Meanwhile contract is a win-win for all concerned – the community group/charity/church have a place to meet, while the owner or landlord of the commercial space benefits from increased footfall and activity, greater security, life returning to the building and the surrounding area – making it more likely that someday soon a commercial tenant will come along.  And Meanwhile, the space is being used for the benefit of the community.

And so it is with profound joy and heartfelt thankfulness to everyone involved that I can now show you the pictures of The Dock and TQ Ltd entering into this contract.  We are now the proud Meanwhile tenants of the beautiful shop unit right beside the SS Nomadic, underneath the Arc Apartments at the Abercorn Basin.  Our front windows look out onto the basin, the Lough and the Kit sculpture; our side windows have a glorious view of the Nomadic, Titanic Belfast, the Metropolitan College and the Drawing Offices.

It’s currently an empty shop unit – another blank page for The Dock – no flooring, electricity, furnishings or fittings.  But it won’t stay that way for long… our Meanwhile Proposal is for a community cafe, an art gallery, and a visitor information venue.  A place for neighbours to meet, conversations to thrive, for Life in the Titanic Quarter to breathe and flourish.

In other words, this is the project we envisioned from the very start – but while we’re still researching and saving up for our boat, we can get started in this Meanwhile Space.  When The Dock started two years ago, I never could’ve dared to dream that such a possibility would come along.  I still need to pinch myself occasionally to realise that it is actually happening now.

So keep your eyes peeled on the Dock website as we fit-out and move into ‘Dock Cafe’ over the coming weeks.  There are some incredibly exciting opportunities already starting to emerge as potential uses and ideas for the space.  But all that is for the next blog – for now, people of The Dock, just take a moment at the end of reading this one to thank God for this wonderful blessing that has come our way.

Great, great days.

It’s EVERYWHERE!

I think it was the Titanic Marmalade that did it… I’ve been saving up pics for a few weeks of all the Titanic-related merchandise that I’ve spotted, and now I think I’ve reached critical mass.

The Titanic marmalade, stacked neatly on the shelves of my local coffee shop, didn’t appear to actually have anything to do with the Titanic – I don’t think it was Captain Smith’s marmalade recipe or anything – but it now joins the ever-swelling ranks of products designed to tempt helpless Titanoraks (ie me) to part with their hard-earned cash.   I mean, what would you rather spread on your toast – Tescos marmalade or Titanic marmalade?  I rest my case.
If you’re of a literary persuasion, for example, you can really get stuck in… to your left is the selection of books available at the Pump House cafe (including some titles and DVDs you won’t find anywhere else); on your right are the bulging bookshelves of the ‘Titanic section’ in Easons on Royal Avenue.  (Is it wrong that I want all of them – ALL OF THEM!)

If you’d like to stop readin’ and start eatin’, you can now do so with a Titanic theme – these are some new (or renamed) restaurants recently spotted around Belfast – prize for the best name has to go to pic3, a noodle bar near the Lisburn Rd…

And of course once you’ve eaten you might need to wash your food down with a Titanic beer.  Or if you don’t feel up to a full meal, don’t despair – you can munch on Titanic crisps between meals without ruining your appetite…

And of course it’s not just on shop-shelves that the T-word is inescapable – as the ripples of the Costa Concordia sinking continue to spread, no article, interview or news report can resist mentioning a certain other maritime tragedy.  The recent Channel 4 documentary on the Concordia even began, in the very first sentence of the voiceover: “Nearly one hundred years afterthe sinking of the Titanic…”

It’s EVERYWHERE!

So get snapping, people of The Dock – if you spot some new Titanic-related merchandise, take a pic and send it in, and we’ll see if we can publish “It’s EVERYWHERE – Part II” before the anniversary arrives in April.  Shouldn’t be too difficult…

Titanic Journey

Just a quick little post – I’d promised that The Dock could be your one-stop site for all the info about the various events, services, concerts and shows to mark the Titanic centenary – so apologies for the late notice on this one!

The Ulster Hall is the venue for Titanic Journey tonight at 7:45pm – a concert by the Ulster Orchestra including the world premiere of a new work by composer Ian Wilson inspired by the Titanic and Olympic.  More details and tickets here, culture vultures!
